My series, created between 2017 – 2020, shows portraits of people based on their discarded clothing.
I see sleep as a small death in a person’s daily life from which we start the day regenerated or exhausted and dress and protect ourselves with fabrics that show us and hide us at the same time. The surrender of control and simultaneous surrender to unconscious processes interested me, as well as the difficulty many people have in falling asleep. Since the idea of efficiency shapes our lives so much, there is pressure for every second to be used sensibly.
We live in several families: our biological family, our own family, the family formed by our friends and with the people who shape us spiritually or serve as orientation. In my painting, these structures of people who surround and influence us become a kind of extended overall portrait.
The mountains of clothing dissolve into complex, abstract patterns – just as our personality forms a culturally influenced patchwork of many facets and influences.
The exhibition „Hide and Show“ includes paintings, works on paper, objects and forms an overall installation in which each visitor can bring the missing people to life with their own imagination.
